Finding the right prom dress for you

Prom season 2025 will be here before you know it, so you need to start looking for your perfect prom dress as soon as possible. This is the final time that you’ll be seeing most your class mates, and you want to look stunning.

The first rule of prom dress to shopping is to find a dress that flatters you. Its purpose is to enhance and compliment your physique and complexion. However, it is easy to underestimate how difficult it can be finding the prom dress you fall in love with, as your style preferences may clash with what suits you. So here at Fairytale Endings, we’ve created a guide to help you determine what’s right for you.

Petite

If you have a petite figure you want to emphasise your waist, therefore opt for a two piece or a tightly fitted dress. You don’t want to drown yourself in fabric so avoid skirts with a lot of volume; you should focus on going for a trumpet or a mermaid shaped dress as it will help outline your curves.

Larger Chested

Prom Dress

For girls who are larger chested, embellishment can be a good option, but if there’s too much it can make you look heavier, so avoid any ruffles or extra fabric that will contribute to this. A V-neck neckline is a preferable as they tend to have straps, thus offering the support needed, but avoid spaghetti thin straps as these can make your shoulders and chest appear larger and heavier. A V-neck also elongates your neckline and draws the eye down, balancing out your figure.  When shopping look out for separate pieces rather than just a dress. Having a large bust normally means you will be different sizes on your top and bottom half. This sometimes proves very problematic when trying to find that perfect fit. If you do prefer to wear dresses an A-line or fluted hem dress can balance out a larger chest.

Hourglass

Hourglass figures want to contour their curves. This look can be achieved with tight dresses such as the trumpet style. Corset styled prom dresses are also a good option as they clinch the waist, thus further highlighting your curves.  It’s better to avoid high necklines and too much embellishment, as these features can make you appear heavier than you are, so instead go for asymmetric, V-neck or an off-shoulder neckline.

Pear Shaped

When you have a pear-shaped physique, you want an A-line dress as the slight flare past the hips will compliment your figure.  Also, you’re better going with an empire waist with this type of prom dress to slim the waist. As the dress is quite flowy, any neckline looks stunning with this style, but if you want to showcase your shoulders then opt for something with a halter neckline.

Rectangular

Furthermore, if your figure is rectangular; you want to make your waist look slimmer and more defined, so prom dresses featuring an empire waist or an embellished bust will draw focus from the waist. Necklines such as V-neck, scoop, halter and off-shoulder really compliment this body type as it keeps the attention towards your upper body. Another good feature to include would be a fuller skirt as it will add proportion and again, emphasise a smaller waist.

Apple

Finally, if your figure is apple shaped it’s a good option to go for something with a fuller skirt and an empire waist as it will make your waist look smaller, the fuller skirt will further support this purpose. Avoid clinging fabrics and opt for something that falls well for comfort as well as drawing attention away from the waist.
